The Vocabulary Section! More vocabulary to prep listeners for the next episode's interview about entering the food industry and what it's like!
Monotonous (adjective) : boring because its always the same
Example sentence: Staying home was fun at first but has become a little monotonous!
A gig (noun): a job that doesnt last a long time or a music performance
Example: I have a gig at a restaurant next week and after that I’ll need to find something else.
Example: I got a cool gig at an amazing venue. Can you come?
Have something lined up (expression): to have something prepared or ready
Example: A: I heard it is going to snow tomorrow. I am not sure we can go to the concert.
B: Oh don’t worry! I have some other things lined up!
Rise to the occasion/Meet the challenge (expressions): to be able to accomplish something
Example: I thought the Knicks were going to lose but they met the challenge and beat the Pistons, 94 to 90!
Ultimately (adverb): Finally, after thinking or discussing everything
Example: It is safer for everyone if schools go 100% remote but ultimately that is the school or parents decision.
Something speaks to someone (expression): to feel connected to something or to feel that you want something
Example: This couch doesnt really speak to me. I think I will keep looking.
Pecking order (expression): a rank or order of positions
Example: There is a pretty strict pecking order in the kitchen at most restaurants, especially the bigger ones.
Be in over ones head: to do something that is too difficult for you
Example: I told my boss that I could translate these documents into English but I am in over my head. I have no idea about legal vocabulary in French!
Bypass (verb): to go around
Example: There is a lot of traffic so if we can take this road we can bypass the city and get home faster.
Ongoing (adjective): continuing
Example: Getting the country back to normal will be an ongoing process!
